MicroGenDX Respiratory Viral Test Service: Your Path to Respiratory Wellness
Gain Clinical Clarity
Each year tens of millions of Americans come down with a respiratory illness, ranging from the common cold or a flu to a more serious condition. Globally, over a billion people get the seasonal flu each year, with ~32 million in just the U.S. alone in 2022-2023.
Of these 32 million, the flu resulted in:
- 15 million people seeking medical visits
- 360,000 hospitalizations
- 21,410 deaths
Whether you are grappling with a persistent cough, fever, or have difficulty breathing, a respiratory illness can be inconvenient and serious – understanding the cause is key to getting better.
MicroGenDX's Respiratory Viral Test Service offers a cutting-edge solution designed to provide precise insights into your respiratory health. With advanced qPCR diagnostic technology, MicroGenDX empowers you to take charge of your health with confidence and clarity.
Why Choose the MicroGenDX Respiratory Viral Test Service?
-
This test screens for five common and potentially serious viruses, including:
- Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV): Particularly dangerous for infants and the elderly, RSV is a common cause of respiratory infections. RSV has made a broader impact with off-season surges, particularly in young children who had less exposure during the pandemic lockdowns.
- Influenza A and B: These viruses are commonly responsible for seasonal flu outbreaks, which may lead to severe respiratory complications, especially in vulnerable populations. These groups include the immunocompromised, the elderly, infants, and young children.
- Human Rhinovirus: A leading cause of the common cold, which can exacerbate chronic respiratory conditions like asthma.
- Adenovirus: Known for causing a wide range of illnesses, from respiratory infections to conjunctivitis.
- SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 Add-on): The virus that transformed global healthcare; testing for this virus is an optional add-on for this test kit.
-
Leading Technology – qPCR:
This test is powered by industry-leading quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) technology, widely recognized as the gold standard known for COVID-19 testing. This exceptional level of precision is crucial to detecting specific viral strains by their genetic signatures, giving you and your healthcare provider the best chance to manage any potential health risk, often before symptoms appear. -
Higher Standard than Leading Methods:
Other products utilize antigen- or antibody-based testing, which can be less reliable as these methods depend on detecting viral proteins or antibodies. These indicators may not be present at detectable levels during early infection or when the virus is latent, leading to a higher risk of false negative results. In addition, these tests require the body to develop an immune response. qPCR results are more objective and precise as they reveal how much viral DNA is present – leaving little room for interpretation. -
Convenient, Private At-Home Test Experience:
This test kit is discreetly delivered to your home with everything you need to collect your sample. Using the provided materials, you can collect your sputum sample in the privacy and comfort of your own home. After collection, simply return the sample to our lab using the prepaid overnight shipping label included in the kit and get your results within 1-2 days.
Who Should Consider This Test?
The Respiratory Viral Test Service is suitable for a wide range of individuals, including:
- Individuals with Persistent Respiratory Symptoms: If you have been experiencing symptoms like a persistent cough, fever, or difficulty breathing, and other standard tests have not provided clear answers, our test can help identify the underlying viral cause.
- Patients with Chronic Respiratory Conditions: For those managing chronic conditions such as asthma, COPD, or other respiratory disorders, our test can help identify viral triggers that may exacerbate your condition, enabling more targeted treatment.
- People with an Unknown Respiratory Illness: If you think you’ve caught a seasonal flu or cold and are unsure what’s behind your symptoms, this test can help identify the specific virus responsible. Knowing the virus at fault can guide your treatment plan and help you recover more effectively. This is particularly useful when symptoms linger or worsen, and you need clarity on the best course of action.
- Healthcare Providers: Physicians seeking a comprehensive diagnostic tool to manage respiratory infections in their patients will find our test invaluable, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, infants, or immunocompromised individuals.

FAQ
You have the flexibility to collect your sample the way you want. MicroGenDX accepts samples via sputum, saliva, or nasopharyngeal swab.
The Respiratory Viral Test Service uses qPCR to detect viral pathogens that cause respiratory illnesses, like RSV, Influenza A/B, and the human rhinovirus. In contrast, the RTI Test Service uses both qPCR and Next-Gen DNA Sequencing (NGS) to detect a broader range of over 57,000 bacteria and fungi, that may be the cause of your chronic cough or respiratory infection. If you are unsure whether the pathogen behind your symptoms are viral, bacterial, or fungal, the RTI Test Service is your best option for a more comprehensive analysis.
Viral, bacterial, and fungal respiratory infections share a similar group of symptoms, with the largest difference being in how each type is treated. Viral infections have more flu-like symptoms like sneezing, body aches, or a runny nose, typically resolving on their own. On the other hand, Bacterial or fungal infections may present more severe, prolonged symptoms like a high fever (often over 100°F), chronic cough, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. While viral infections do not respond to antibiotics, bacterial and fungal infections often require treatment with antibiotics or antifungal medications. Viral infections can be made easier with bed rest, decongestants, fluids, and pain relievers, among other over-the-counter options.
Yes, the test can be helpful for those at risk of viral respiratory infections, even if they are asymptomatic. Knowing one is infected can help prevent spreading a virus when contagious.
