What is a UTI?
A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is an infection that can affect any part of your urinary system or tract, such as the kidneys, bladder, ureters (carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder), and urethra (directs urine out of the body). UTIs are classified as either “upper” or “lower” based on the infection’s location in the urinary tract. What are the Main UTI Types?
These infections are usually caused by pathogenic bacteria or fungi. As lower UTIs are the most common UTI type, the most common symptoms are signs of bladder inflammation, such as:
Factors that increase the risk of contracting a UTI include:
Why are UTIs more common in women? Although both men and women can get bladder infections, they are much more common in women. In fact, according to the federal Office of Women’s Health, women get UTIs up to 30 times more often than men. This discrepancy occurs because women have shorter urethras and their urinary tracts are closer to their vagina and rectum, making it easier for bacteria to enter.
For those living with constant bladder pressure, a persistent urge to urinate, and relentless pain. This is the reality for those suffering from Interstitial Cystitis (IC), a chronic lower UTI condition also known as “bladder pain syndrome.” At any given moment In the United States, IC affects between 3 to 8 million women (almost the population of New York City) and up to 4 million men (the population of Los Angeles), making daily life a struggle for many in the US and many more abroad.
Causes & Symptoms
Despite its prevalence, the exact causes remain unknown, but likely stem from multiple factors. The symptoms of IC can fluctuate and may be worsened by stress or sexual activity, eating certain foods, or long periods of sitting. Symptoms include: Pelvic area pain ranging from dull ache to severe discomfort • Similar indicators to those of a UTI, such as
Risks Factors that can increase the risk of developing IC include:
Diagnostic Difficulty As both UTIs and IC involve bladder inflammation and share similar symptoms, chronic UTIs can masquerade as IC, causing misdiagnoses. It’s also possible to have both at the same time, which can worsen symptoms. The overlap between these two conditions that require differing therapeutic approaches is a key reason why accurate testing is crucial. Cultures often struggle to identify the cause of IC or chronic UTIs, so more modern diagnostic tools are needed.
Unlike standard tests that often miss hidden infections or provide limited, unhelpful results, UroKEY combines qPCR and NGS technologies to detect a broader range of pathogens by their DNA; with higher accuracy, sensitivity, and precision than conventional testing. In fact, MicroGenDX testing even reports the relative abundance of each pathogen as a percent of the total microbe population.
UroKEY focuses on diagnosing Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) and related urinary issues by identifying pathogenic bacteria and fungi in the urinary tract. In contrast, the WomensKEY Complete Test provides a comprehensive analysis of the female reproductive and urinary systems, addressing a broader range of infections and conditions. WomensKEY involves a urine sample and vaginal swab and can be thought of as a combination of our UroKEY and Vaginal Test Service products. Both UroKEY and WomensKEY can be purchased with the optional STI add-on.
UroKEY detects pathogens in the urinary tract to support the diagnosis and treatment of UTIs and related conditions. However, the Vaginal Test Service identifies infections and microbial imbalances in the vaginal microbiome, pinpointing key pathogens and conditions such as bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections. This test involves a vaginal swab. Both tests come with an optional add-on to detect STIs.
UroKEY detects pathogens in the urinary tract to support the diagnosing and managing of UTIs and related conditions. By using urine and semen samples, MensKEY Complete Test’s scope is broader, addressing conditions in men’s urinary and reproductive systems. Both tests can be purchased with the optional STI add-on to detect STIs.
It depends. Antibiotics can travel throughout your body and end up in your urine sample, potentially degrading the DNA of any microbes and skewing your test results. For optimal accuracy, it’s generally recommended to refrain from taking antibiotics for at least 48 hours before producing the sample. However, your provider will give the best guidance based on your medical history. Please consult them before changing your antibiotic use.
Chronic or recurrent UTIs are sometimes the result of more than just a single pathogen, making that infection polymicrobial. Traditional urine culture can be biased towards a single microbe based on its colony-forming unit (CFU) count, overrepresenting its presence in the actual infection. This bias can lead to inappropriate or incomplete treatment. In fact, some problematic microbes cannot be grown in culture, depriving you and your provider of helpful data and further complicating treatment. The advantage of NGS testing lies in its ability to detect multiple microbes and report the abundancy of each, including those that may not grow in culture. With its sensitivity and precision, NGS effectively supplements the drawbacks of standard culture testing.
Yes, UroKEY can still provide valuable clinical insight for people with underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or a weakened immune system. With precision microbial detection and insight into antimicrobial resistance, UroKEY helps tailor treatment to your personal health situation, ensuring effective management of infections – even those that may contribute to persistent conditions.
