Infections information

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

What is a UTI?: A urinary tract infection (UTI) can affect any part of your urinary system, including the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. UTIs are classified as “upper” when they affect the kidneys or ureters, and “lower” when they affect the bladder or urethra. Symptoms:

  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
  • Pelvic or lower back pain
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pain during or after sex

Causes: UTIs are typically caused by harmful bacteria or fungi. Factors that increase the risk of UTIs include sexual activity, poor hygiene, an enlarged prostate, kidney stones, a narrow urethra, and a suppressed immune system. Diagnosis and Treatment: MensKEY provides comprehensive detection of pathogens responsible for UTIs, including antimicrobial resistance factors, enabling your healthcare provider to make a precise diagnosis and treatment plan for faster recovery.

Interstitial Cystitis (IC)

What is IC?: Also known as "Bladder Pain Syndrome," IC is a chronic condition that comes with bladder pressure, frequent urination, and pelvic pain. Symptoms:

  • Pelvic area pain
  • Frequent and/or urgent need to urinate
  • Painful urination
  • Blood in urine

Causes and Risks: The exact causes of IC are unknown but may involve multiple factors, including bladder inflammation and chronic UTIs. Risk factors include age, autoimmune conditions, chronic prostatitis, physical trauma to the bladder or pelvic area, a family history of IC, and having other chronic pain disorders. Diagnosis and Treatment: MensKEY helps identify antimicrobial resistance, along with the bacterial or fungal pathogens causing IC, to support accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment planning by your healthcare provider.

Prostatitis

What is Prostatitis?: Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland, which can be painful and cause frequent urination, difficulty urinating, or a burning feeling while urinating. It is one of the most common conditions seen by urologists. Symptoms:

  • Pain in the genital area, groin, lower abdomen, or lower back
  • Frequent urination
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Burning sensation during urination

Causes and Risks: Prostatitis can be caused by bacterial infection, although nonbacterial forms, such as Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS), exist. Risk factors include being young to middle-aged, having a history of infection, or injury to the pelvic area. Diagnosis and Treatment: MensKEY can identify the specific bacteria or fungi causing prostatitis, along with antimicrobial resistance. With test results in hand, healthcare providers are empowered to formulate a targeted diagnosis and treatment plan that uses the most effective drugs possible.

Epididymitis

What is Epididymitis?: Epididymitis is an inflammation of the epididymis, a coiled tube at the back of the testicles that stores and carries sperm from the testicles up into the penis. While in this tube, sperm cells mature to the point where they can fertilize an egg. When this tube becomes swollen, it can cause pain and swelling in the testicles – lasting up to 6 weeks. Typically, only one testicle will swell. This condition is most frequently diagnosed in men aged 20 to 39. In fact, the National Library of Medicine estimates that over 600,000 (1 in 1,000) men in the U.S. are affected each year. Symptoms:

  • Pain and swelling in the testicles
  • Painful urination or ejaculation
  • Redness, or tenderness in the scrotum (sac that contains testes)
  • Lump on your testicle
  • Enlarged lymph nodes on the groin
  • Bloody urine
  • Urgent need to pee
  • Fever

Causes and Risks: Epididymitis is often caused by bacterial infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Risk factors include having multiple sexual partners, a history of STIs, or recent urinary tract surgery. Diagnosis and Treatment: MensKEY provides comprehensive detection of the bacteria causing epididymitis, enabling accurate diagnosis and swift treatment. The optional STI panel can further enhance the scope of a provider’s diagnosis.

FAQ

Unlike regular tests that often miss stealthy infections or give limited, unhelpful results, MensKEY combines qPCR and NGS technologies to uncover a broader range of pathogens with better accuracy, sensitivity, and precision than conventional testing. MicroGenDX testing reports the abundancy of each pathogen as a percent of the total microbe population and lists any detected antibiotic resistance genes, while noting antimicrobials that may present effective treatment options.

Both MensKEY and WomensKEY Complete provide holistic insights into the urinary and reproductive health of men and women. Using both urine and semen samples, MensKEY looks for the microbes that can cause:

  • UTIs
  • Prostatitis
  • Interstitial Cystitis (IC)
  • Epididymitis

WomensKEY Complete uses a vaginal swab and urine sample to detect the same pathogens behind conditions like UTIs and also those behind female-specific conditions such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) and yeast infections. Both tests come with an optional add-on to screen for select STIs (Chlamydia, Mycoplasma genitalium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trichomonas vaginalis) via a separate qPCR panel. Plus, both offer a urine biomarkers add-on to screen for Leukocyte esterase and pH levels, which can help identify active infections that microbial analysis may not uncover alone.

MensKEY assesses both male urinary and reproductive health with semen and urine samples, while UroKEY takes only a urine sample. UroKEY identifies the pathogens behind UTIs, IC, and related conditions. While MensKEY does the same, it also detects the pathogens that cause prostatitis, epididymitis, and other conditions affecting men’s reproductive health Both kits offer optional STI testing as a separate qPCR panel that checks for Chlamydia, Mycoplasma genitalium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Trichomonas vaginalis. Plus, another add-on to check urine biomarkers (Leukocyte esterase and pH levels) to better uncover conditions that microbial analysis may not detect by itself.

Yes, MensKEY can still provide valuable clinical insight for people with underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or a weakened immune system. With precision microbe detection and insight into antimicrobial resistance, MensKEY helps tailor treatment to your personal health situation, ensuring effective management of infections – even those that may contribute to persistent conditions.

Antibiotics can travel throughout your body and end up in your urine sample, potentially degrading the DNA of any microbes and skewing your test results. For optimal accuracy, it’s generally recommended to refrain from taking antibiotics for at least 48 hours before producing the sample. However, your provider will give the best guidance based on your medical history. Please consult them before changing your antibiotic use.

Yes, MensKEY is ideal for verifying the success of your treatment. After completing your treatment, use MensKEY to confirm that all pathogens have been eliminated and check for any lingering drug-resistant microbes. The enhanced sensitivity of qPCR and NGS can help prevent recurrent infections and safeguard your well-being, making it an excellent option for follow-up testing.

The MicroGenDX lab report will list any bacteria or fungi our qPCR + NGS test finds in your sample. However, not all microbes that the test detects are harmful pathogens. Consulting your healthcare provider on your unique medical history will provide guidance on which microbes to treat for.
