What is BV? Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal condition, affecting women aged 15-44. BV occurs when the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted, allowing harmful bacteria, such as Gardnerella vaginalis, to overgrow and outnumber the beneficial Lactobacillus bacteria. This imbalance can lead to uncomfortable symptoms and increase the risk of other infections. Causes The causes are not fully understood, but certain factors can contribute to its development, such as sexual activity, douching, or use of an intrauterine device (IUD). It is more common in sexually active women, but is not classified as an STI. Hormonal changes, stress, and other disruptions to the vaginal environment may also trigger BV.
Symptoms
Diagnosis and Treatment The Vaginal Test Service can help identify imbalances in vaginal bacteria, aiding your healthcare provider in making a BV diagnosis. BV is typically treated with prescribed antibiotics, and identifying the presence of antimicrobial resistance ensures the most effective treatment is used. Early detection is key to restoring the healthy balance of bacteria in the vagina. Yeast Infections / Candidiasis What is a Yeast Infection? A vaginal yeast infection is a fungal infection that causes irritation, discharge, and intense itchiness of the vagina and vulva. Yeast infections, also known as vaginal candidiasis, is caused by an overgrowth of Candida fungi, most commonly Candida albicans. This condition is very common and is known to cause discomfort. Causes Several factors can trigger yeast infections, including antibiotic use, hormonal fluctuations (such as during pregnancy or due to birth control), high blood sugar levels, and a weakened immune system. Yeast infections occur when the balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina is disrupted, leading to overgrowth. Several factors may trigger yeast infections, including antibiotic use, hormonal changes (e.g., due to birth control), high blood sugar levels, diabetes, wet or tight clothing, severe stress, or a weakened immune system. Symptoms
Diagnosis and Treatment The Vaginal Test Service can identify the specific strain of Candida causing the infection, helping your healthcare provider make a precise diagnosis. Treatment usually involves antifungal medications, which can effectively resolve the infection.

What are Aerobic and Anaerobic Infections? Aerobic bacteria require oxygen to grow, while anaerobic bacteria thrive in oxygen-deprived environments. Both types of bacteria can lead to infections in the vagina and are associated with conditions like bacterial vaginosis (BV) and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Causes Infections occur when there is an imbalance in the vaginal microbiome, often due to a decrease in beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus. This allows harmful bacteria to multiply and cause infections. Symptoms
Diagnosis and Treatment The Vaginal Test Service helps your healthcare provider identify the specific bacteria causing your infection, whether its aerobic or anaerobic. With this in-depth insight, your provider can select the most effective antibiotic treatment for targeted care.
The MicroGenDX Vaginal Test Service uses advanced Next-Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS) and Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) technologies to identify over 57,000 types of bacteria and fungi, providing 99.2% accuracy. This far exceeds traditional culture methods that can miss up to 98% of microbial growth. Additionally, the test also screens for 17 types of antimicrobial resistance genes, offering you and your provider actionable results to inform targeted treatment and a better recovery.
The Vaginal Test Service focuses solely on identifying bacterial and fungal infection in the vagina, making it ideal for women experiencing symptoms like unusual discharge, strange odor, itching, or pelvic pain. It uses a vaginal swab to detect infections like bacterial vaginosis (BV) or yeast overgrowth. On the other hand, WomensKEY provides a more comprehensive assessment of both the urinary and reproductive health by testing a urine sample and a vaginal swab. It detects a broader range of conditions affecting the vagina and (or) the urinary tract, such as UTIs or interstitial cystitis (IC). It also screens for the same conditions as the Vaginal Test Service. WomensKEY is best for individuals with symptoms affecting both areas or those seeking a broader test.
If you’re experiencing symptoms such as unusual vaginal discharge, persistent odor, itching, burning, or pelvic discomfort, this test is ideal. These symptoms could be caused by conditions like bacterial vaginosis (BV), fungal infections (yeast), or other microbial imbalances that need precise identification for proper treatment.
Yes, the test is suitable for proactive health check-up. Regular screenings help identify potential infections early, even if you’re asymptomatic, enabling you to maintain optimal vaginal health.
Antibiotics can travel throughout your body and may degrade the DNA of any microbes in your urine or vaginal sample, potentially impacting your results. It’s generally recommended to refrain from taking antibiotics at least 48 hours before collecting your sample. However, your provider will give the best guidance based on your medical history to ensure you take the best action for your health.
MicroGenDX’s lab report will list any bacteria or fungi our qPCR + NGS test finds in your sample. However, not all microbes that the test detects are harmful pathogens. Consulting your healthcare provider on your unique medical history will provide guidance on which microbes to treat for.
Sample should be shipped out to the lab within 24 hours of collection. If you are unable to ship out the sample within 24 hours, be sure to place in a refrigerator.
Samples that have not been submitted, cannot be refunded after 90 days.
New York orders for this product will only run qPCR for gene resistance (excluding Quinolone resistance) and bacterial load; followed by NGS, which compares the DNA to a library of over 57,000 microbial species.
Samples originating from New York patients, or providers, will NOT receive antibiotic recommendations.
We DO NOT offer refunds on shipping fees or lab services.
MicroGenDX cannot ship to Russia, China (except Hong Kong), Ukraine, Hungary, India, or any country in Africa.
