Your urinary and reproductive health is deeply connected to your intimate partner's. What affects one of you may be quietly affecting both, even if only one shows symptoms. Partnershared infections often act like recurring STIs: they fade with treatment, only to return via reinfection from an undiagnosed partner.
The result?
A persistent cycle of misdiagnosis, treatment, reinfection, and frustration.
CouplesKEY by MicroGenDX brings clarity to both sides of the relationship. This at-home testing bundle includes two kits to help you uncover the root cause of infection, addressing the full picture of your shared health.
Whether you're managing symptoms, dealing with recurring infections, or simply want clearer answers together, CouplesKEY delivers the precise insights you both need for better intimacy and to move forward in sync.
Designed for all intimate partnerships:
In one simple step, both partners can test together, get answers, and stop the cycle of mystery symptoms and mismatched treatments. All combinations are available under CouplesKEY, supporting couples who want shared clarity and personalized care.
Say hello to clinical clarity with CouplesKEY’s qPCR + NGS testing!
1. Comprehensive Pathogen Detection
CouplesKEY identifies over 60,000 bacteria and fungi that can disrupt urinary and reproductive health – thanks to our signature Next-Generation DNA Sequencing (NGS) technology. NGS delivers a clear, high-resolution picture of each partner’s microbial landscape to support well-informed diagnoses by helping your provider pinpoint exactly what microbe is driving an infection. Verified by the independent College of American Pathologists (CAP), MicroGenDX’s NGS testing is 99.2% accurate, making it one of the most advanced and trusted molecular testing methods available.
2. Profiling Antimicrobial Resistance
Unlike most tests which don't screen for drug resistance, CouplesKEY uses qPCR to detect 17 common antibiotic resistance genes that can make standard treatments ineffective. By screening for these resistance markers, your provider can prescribe the most appropriate antibiotics for your infection from the start – saving you both the time, money, and stress of a trial-and-error approach to care.
3. AI Microbe Evaluation
Powered by AI and the latest scientific research, the Urine Pathogenicity Report enhances your provider’s insight into your condition by algorithmically categorizing each microbe in your urine sample as:
This report offers your provider deeper clarity into what the current scientific literature says about each microbe’s potential impact on the urinary microbiome. It’s a helpful starting point for diagnostic and patient care decisions, but your provider will make decisions based on their judgement and your medical history.
The Urine Pathogenicity Report produces the most accurate results for patients who are not immunocompromised, as it does not account for the effects of weakened immune system conditions.
4. Rapid Results in One Report
You’ll receive both your qPCR and NGS results in a single report, returned 24 hours after your sample reaches the lab. Your report will outline any detected antibiotic resistance genes, the microbes found, how much of each is present, and a list of antibiotics your provider can consider for treatment.
5. Convenient Patient Experience
Each test kit is mailed straight to your doorstep. Collect your sample in the comfort and privacy of your home with our easy-to-follow instructions. Then send the kit back using the included prepaid overnight shipping.
6. Additional Health Screening
Want a deeper look into your health?
Add the Urine Analysis to check for signs of infection through pH and leukocyte esterase levels or include the Full STI Panel to screen for common STIs like Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Trichomonas, and Mycoplasma genitalium.

UTI’s are infections that can affect any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. UTIs are classified as "upper" when they affect the kidneys or ureters, and "lower" when they affect the bladder or urethra. Symptoms include pain or burning during urination, frequent urge to urinate, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, pelvic or lower back pain, and blood in the urine. UTIs are typically caused by contact with bacteria or fungi, with risk factors including sexual activity, poor hygiene, anatomical factors, and suppressed immune systems. Recent studies indicate that UTI’s may be caused by pathogens from a sexual partner, and treatment of the couple can yield better effects. Women are up to 30 times more likely to develop UTIs than men due to their shorter urethras.
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a condition caused by an imbalance of bacteria in the vagina. It is the most common vaginal condition in women of reproductive age, affecting women aged 15-44. BV occurs when harmful bacteria outnumber beneficial ones, leading to symptoms such as unusual discharge, odor, discomfort, vaginal itching, or irritation. In a healthy vagina, lactobacilli, the beneficial bacteria that keep the vaginal lining healthy, dominate the microbial environment. When lactobacilli decrease, potentially harmful bacteria can overgrow, disrupting the delicate microbial balance of the vagina and creating conditions for BV. In fact, a recent study indicates in these conditions, anaerobic bacteria (like Gardnerella vaginalis or Prevotella spp.) can overgrow and contribute to BV.
A yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is caused by an overgrowth of yeast in the vagina. This overgrowth can lead to symptoms such as itching, burning, redness, and swelling in the vaginal area, as well as a thick, white discharge. Yeast infections are often triggered by factors such as antibiotic use, hormonal changes, diabetes, or a weakened immune system.
Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland, which can be painful and cause urinary symptoms. It is one of the most common conditions seen by urologists. Symptoms include pain in the genital area, groin, lower abdomen, or lower back, frequent urination, difficulty urinating, and burning sensations during urination. Prostatitis can be caused by bacterial infections, although non-bacterial forms like Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome (CPPS) also exist. Risk factors include being young to middle-aged, having a history of infection, or injury to the pelvic area.
Epididymitis is an inflammation of the epididymis, a tube at the back of the testicles that stores and carries sperm. This condition can cause pain and swelling in the testicles. Symptoms include pain and swelling in the testicles, painful urination or ejaculation, redness or tenderness in the scrotum, an urgent need to urinate, enlarged lymph nodes on the groin, bloody or cloudy urine, and fever. Epididymitis is often caused by bacterial infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The National Library of Medicine estimates that over 600,000 men in the U.S. are affected by epididymitis each year. Risk factors include having multiple sexual partners, a history of STIs, or recent urinary tract surgery
Interstitial cystitis (IC), also known as bladder pain syndrome, is a chronic condition with symptoms including Pelvic pain, frequent or urgent need to urinate, bladder pain, painful or burning urination, bloody or cloudy urine, bladder inflammation, and strong-smelling urine. Despite its prevalence, the exact causes of IC are unknown, but it may involve multiple factors, including bladder inflammation and chronic infections. Symptoms include pelvic area pain, frequent or urgent need to urinate, bladder pain or discomfort, and painful urination. IC affects between 3-8 million women and up to 4 million men in the U.S.

Prior and emerging research is showing that many urinary and reproductive tract infections can be passed between partners, even if one person has no symptoms. If only one partner is tested or treated, the infection may return or remain unresolved if the other partner is, for example, an asymptomatic carrier. CouplesKEY tests both people together, identifying any shared microbes or hidden infections so that treatment is comprehensive and effective for both of you.
CouplesKEY bundles either a WomensKEY and MensKEY, two MensKEYs, or two WomensKEYs to support partners of any gender pairing with the answers they need. WomensKEY and MensKEY are our premier urogenital qPCR + NGS tests, tailored to the unique health problems of each gender. When used together, these tests help uncover infections that might otherwise go unnoticed in one partner. The coordinated testing approach helps your provider identify cross-infections and treat both partners simultaneously to reduce the risk of reinfection.
Yes. Even if only one partner has symptoms, testing both individuals can be crucial. The asymptomatic partner could still be a carrier of a microbe that’s fueling the infection. Testing both of you ensures that nothing is missed and allows your provider to address the root cause.
Yes. Each partner receives their own secure, comprehensive report that includes both qPCR and NGS results, presented together. You’ll be able to access your results via our HIPAA-compliant online portal usually within 24 hours after we receive your sample.
Each report will show:
This detail helps your provider make a more informed diagnosis and treatment plan.
It’s common for each partner to have a unique microbial profile, even in shared infections. Your provider can use both test results to compare microbes and determine whether one of you may be acting as a carrier. This helps guide appropriate treatment strategies for both individuals —even if only one shows obvious symptoms.
Yes! CouplesKEY is inclusive and available in three pairings:
No matter your pairing, you’ll receive the same comprehensive testing and support that you’d expect from MicroGenDX
Yes. If either partner has taken antibiotics within the last 48 hours, it may reduce the accuracy of the results by degrading microbial DNA in the sample. We recommend waiting at least 48 hours after your last dose before collecting your sample — unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider.
