qPCR is the gold standard in detection
FSA/HSA Accepted
Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), aka herpes, is a prevalent and often misunderstood sexually transmitted infection (STI) that affects over 4 billion people worldwide. In the U.S., nearly 19 million people are estimated to have HSV, though many are unaware due to the often asymptomatic or mild nature of the virus.
Typical symptoms include sores or blisters on the genitals/lips, itching, or flu-like symptoms and may last over a week.
HSV is categorized into two main types:
Both types can be transmitted to either area of the body and cause sores on the mouth, face, or genitals. Understanding your HSV status is crucial to effective treatment and prevention. MicroGenDX’s HSV Test presents a state-of-the-art, at-home testing solution that provides fast, accurate, and trustworthy results. This advanced test leverages leading-edge qPCR technology, often recognized as the gold standard for COVID-19 testing, to accurately detect both HSV-1 and HSV-2.
Herpes infections can be asymptomatic, meaning that a person shows no signs of the virus but can still transmit the virus to others. Regular screening is vital for anyone who is sexually active, particularly those with multiple partners or at a higher risk of exposure. Early detection allows for timely treatment, reducing the frequency and severity of outbreaks.
Using qPCR technology, MicroGenDX delivers the highest accuracy in detecting HSV-1 and HSV-2, providing you with trustworthy results.
From the convenience of at-home testing kits to responsive customer support, MicroGenDX prioritizes your health and privacy, to make your experience as stress-free as possible.
With over 20 years of experience in molecular diagnostics, MicroGenDX is a trusted name in STI testing, supported by a strong track record of experience and use of advanced testing tools.
MicroGenDX prices its products affordably to reflect their value and ensure high-quality testing is accessible to everyone. We believe comprehensive, reliable diagnostics should be within reach for all who seek better health.

MicroGenDX is more than a test provider—it’s your partner in achieving long-term health and well-being.
HSV symptoms can vary in severity and often include:
In many cases, symptoms are so mild that they can be mistaken for other skin conditions. As a result, many people with HSV are unaware they carry it. Early recognition of symptoms and prompt testing are essential to manage HSV and reduce its spread.
Yes, the HSV test is meant for both men and women. The test accepts swabs of either the male or female genital areas.
MicroGenDX’s HSV Test uses leading-edge, highly sensitive qPCR technology to detect even trace amounts of viral DNA. This method provides higher accuracy and faster results compared to conventional tests like antibody- or antigen-based ones, which can miss early or asymptomatic infections. Those methods are less reliable than qPCR which detects the genetic signature (DNA/RNA) of a specific HSV strain, rather than depending on the body to create detectable levels of specific antibodies. In addition, MicroGenDX’s test identifies both HSV-1 and HSV-2, presenting complete and rapid insight into your HSV status within 24-48 hours.
Yes, HSV can still spread when a person has no visible symptoms. This is because of viral shedding, when the virus is present on and released from the skin or mucous membranes (inside of the body), even if the person has no sores or outbreaks. Asymptomatic individuals can unknowingly transmit HSV during these shedding periods, making it possible to spread the virus. HSV testing helps detect the virus regardless of symptoms, providing crucial information to manage and prevent transmission.
Yes, the HSV Test can be used as a follow-up test. After an initial diagnosis and treatment, follow-up testing confirms whether the virus is still present even if you are asymptomatic. This helps you ensure that you’ve treated the virus effectively and reduced the risk of transmission to others. The high accuracy of qPCR testing makes it a great choice to monitor your HSV status over time.
How often you should get an HSV test depends largely on your lifestyle and risk factors. If you have multiple sexual partners, engage in unprotected sex, or if you partner has tested positive for HSV, then regular testing is recommended of at least once per year. Even if you have no symptoms, annual screening or testing after a potential exposure can help you look after your sexual health and reduce the risk of spreading HSV.
